Teaching Older Students to Read Words: Did you know that research estimates that 85% or more of students with comprehension challenges also have word recognition needs in grades 3+? Sometimes\, these needs are quite significant. In this session\, we&rsquo\;ll dive deep into how to support older students in learning how to decode words: what is word recognition? What is decoding? How do we identify students who need help &ndash\; and what are the powerful routines we can use to move them along?

This professional learning session will focus on supporting upper elementary and secondary literacy\, exploring evidence-based strategies to develop literacies and empower students to take ownership of their learning.
Julia B. Lindsey\, Ph.D.\, is a literacy expert who partners with districts to transform reading outcomes. She is the author of Reading Above the Fray\, and Small Groups\, Big Results. Dr. Lindsey&rsquo\;s work focuses on building teacher knowledge\, supporting the implementation of evidence-based practices and materials\, and ensuring all students can become successful\, empowered young readers.
Dr. Lindsey holds a BS in Psychology from Davidson College\, a MAT from Relay Graduate School of Education\, and a Ph.D. in Educational Studies from the University of Michigan. She is a proud former elementary school teacher. \;
