During our time together\, we will dig deeper into the mathematical concepts embedded in the state standards and identify alignment and misalignment within purchased curriculums. After doing math together\, we will discuss and plan for providing more meaningful ways to engage students in sense making\, justifying\, and generalizing about core math ideas across the middle school level. Each of the four sessions will be stand alone and focus on different standards. Prior to each session\, educators will need to identified at least one lesson that directly relates to that session’s standards This work is funded through the Oregon Math Project.

March 3rd will focus on proportional relationships and the connections between the standards: 6.RP.A\, Understand the concept of a ration in authentic contexts\, and use ration language to describe a ration relationship between two quantities\; 7.RP.A Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve mathematical problems in authentic contexts\; and 8.AEE.B Understand the connections between proportional relationships\, lines\, and linear equations.

April 7th will focus on the concepts embedded within the geometry standards: 6.GM.A\, Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area\, surface area\, and volume\; 7.GM.B\, solve mathematical problems in authentic contexts involving angle measure\, area\, surface area\, and volume\; and 8.GM.C\, solve mathematical problems in authentic contexts involving volume of cylinders\, cones\, and spheres.

May 5th will focus on data reasoning\, specifically related to analyzing\, summarizing\, and describing data (standards 6.DR.C\, 7.DR.C\, 8.DR.C).

June 2nd will center around everyone’s favorite F word - fractions!
