Making Writing Meaningful - Using neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and language acquisition to promote the integration of writing and science instruction that is rigorous and equitable for all students.

Who should come?  K-2 Teachers, TOSAs, Administrators

This learning is being delivered as a cohort model that includes 3 full days of professional learning. Participants will stretch their understanding of the writing process and the teaching of science within their own understanding. The vision of this cohort model is to unpack, learn, and build upon a repertoire of teaching practices that cultivate student dialogue, community reasoning, intellectual rigor, as well as the ability to learn and HOW to learn.

Teachers will need to bring the following:

  • Scope and sequence
  • Typical writing lesson plan
  • Typical science lesson plan
  • A unit of study to meet science and writing standards
  • Literacy block times within your day
  • A sense of humor  - learning is fun! 

Questions to be addressed embedded in our learning: 

  • How do we address and ensure intellectual engagement and attention to equity?
  • What is AST (Ambitious Science Teaching)? 
  • How is neuroscience informing teaching and learning?
  • How do I access learning pathways for ALL students in writing and science?
  • What is strength-based teaching and why is it important?

Objectives

  • Describe how neuroscience informs teaching and learning
  • Identify the qualities of a good anchor phenomena
  • Utilize students' funds of knowledge to help them build towards big science ideas.
  • Use science practices to write/develop coherent evidence-based explanations of complex phenomena.
  • Revise a science or writing lesson 
    • Integrate culturally and linguistically based strategies into instruction
    • Integrate strategies that will support students with disabilities and multilingual learners (All students!)
Pre-registration is required for attendance. Please dress in layers for temperature comfort.
