The current state of safety and mental health in schools remains a topic of critical concern and discussion. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need to prioritize the emotional well-being of students alongside physical safety. This shift in perspective acknowledges that a safe learning environment encompasses not only physical security but also emotional and mental security.

The 2024 School Safety & Mental Health Summit aims to bring together school and community partners to discuss current topics related to school safety, school culture and climate, and mental and behavioral health through a lens of equity and culturally-sustaining practices. The summit will serve as a platform to unite diverse perspectives and expertise in sharing best practices, research findings, and innovative approaches to promote safety and mental well-being in educational settings.

Keynote speaker Michael Essien, the executive director of community schools and partnerships for the Alameda County Office of Education in California, will present on “Right and Wrong Drivers: A Systems Approach to Address School Safety and Mental Health.”

In addition to the morning keynote, participants will have the opportunity to curate their experience by choosing up to four workshops. Workshops and panel discussions will explore various aspects of fostering a school environment where students feel both physically and emotionally safe. Participants will hear from presenters and engage in collaborative discussions about these crucial issues.
