This event is reserved for school staff working in Columbia, Clatsop, Tillamook, & Washington Counties:

This presentation will focus on Brain Injury, Return to Play, and Return to School Laws in the State of Oregon, IEPs, 504s, and Immediate Temporary Accommodations Plans (ITAP) as they relate to Brain Injuries. Discuss the history of the Center on Brain Injury Research and Training (CBIRT), and how we support students, families, school personnel, and other professionals within the state of Oregon. Senate Bill 420, “Creating the New Brain Injury Resource Navigation Office” will be discussed, and best practices for schools regarding students with brain injury.

Target Audience:
School staff supporting students with Traumatic Brain Injury or any individual wanting to learn more about the topic areas.

Presenters:
Melissa McCart, Ed.D, is a national and international speaker and author on the topic of brain injury and return to school following injury. She  earned her doctorate in Educational Methodology, Policy and Leadership, her M.S. in behavioral disorders and applied behavior analysis, and her  administrator’s license from the University of Oregon. She has worked extensively with at-risk children and families as a behavior specialist,  behavior consultant, and special education teacher. She is currently the Director of the Center on Brain Injury Research and Training (CBIRT) at  the  University of Oregon. Her research focuses on evidence-based educator training, advancing best practices for return to school following brain injury, and aligning educational policy with the evidence base. Prior to joining the CBIRT team, Melissa spent 7 years as a school administrator, 2 years as a behavioral consultant, and 8 years as a special education teacher to students with emotional/behavioral disorders. Melissa currently is a member of the National Collaborative on Childhood Brain Injury and serves on the Return to Learn, Policy, Common Data Elements and Community of Practice Committees.


David Kracke, JD, has been a member of the Oregon State Bar for 33 years. He has an extensive background working with private and public stakeholder groups in the realm of legislative and policy initiatives. He is a recognized legislative and policy expert in TBI. David served as a lead author and legislative advocate for the stakeholder-informed efforts to pass concussion-response education laws, including Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) 336.485, (“Max’s Law”), one of the nation’s first enacted laws establishing concussion protocols for concussed high school athletes and ORS 417.875, (“Jenna’s Law), a companion law to Max’s Law which provided state-wide concussion protocols for all youth athletes in the state of Oregon regardless of league affiliation.
