Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)

Mary Michael, Education Specialist - Mental Health & Behavior, Nathan Shay, School Safety & Prevention Specialist
Event Description:
Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Highly recommended for any school staff who interact with students 12 and older.
Event Objectives:
How to recognize the signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health or substance use problem.
How to listen non judgmentally and give reassurance to a person who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use problem.
How to refer a person to the appropriate professional support services.

Segment 1: Welcome to YMHFA
Segment 2: YMHFA Self-Paced Introduction
Segment 3: YMHFA in a Non-Crisis Situation
Segment 4: YMHFA in Crisis Situations
Segment 5: Self-Care for the Youth Mental Health First Aider
Prior to session start date participants will be required to complete 2 hours of virtual, asynchronous pre-work before the February 7 session.
Who Should Attend:
Administrators, Teachers, School Counselors, School Social Workers, School Psychologists, Behavioral Support Specialists, TOSA’s, IAs, and other Mental Health Support Staff. Recommended for any staff who works with students 12 years and older.
