Event Description
Overview
In this on-demand course, we will present some of the key research findings in the Science of Reading, as well as the challenges facing school systems and teachers today. You will learn that Phonological Awareness follows a developmental timeline, and about the
phonemic awareness skills
that students need to master, beginning in kindergarten to read and spell individual words and to create a lexicon of rapidly accessed words. We will share the principles that govern the spelling of English words and the history and origins of English. English is a morphophonemic language, which means those prefixes, root syllables and suffixes impact the meaning, the spelling and the part of speech of words. Finally, we will explore some of the interfaces of grammar, syntax, vocabulary and text structures that underlie read and written passages.
Module Learning Goals
By the end of this course, participants will:
Be familiar with the research findings from a number of disciplines about how and what a person needs to experience in order to become a proficient reader and writer.
Understand the articulatory features of the consonants and vowels and how teaching them aids phonemic awareness, reading and spelling of individual words.
Explain the concepts of Phonological Awareness and Phonemic Awareness.
Develop strategies for what, when and how to teach phonemic awareness skills.
Understand how the English language is based on logical and recognizable patterns that make spelling and reading of individual words thought provoking and the history and evolution of the spelling and meaning of words - morphology and etymology.
Understand the skill components needed to read and understand and express that understanding in writing.
