Community Engagement - On-Demand Online Course 2024/25

Event Details


Overview
In this on-demand course, participants will delve into why community engagement in schools and/or districts is important. They will examine one to four community engagement strategies of their choice: listening sessions, focus groups, empathy interviews and appreciative interviews. The overall goal is to leave the course ready to try at least one community engagement strategy in their setting.
 
Module Learning Goals
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Cite five different community engagement strategies.
  • Distinguish the different community engagement strategies from each other in terms of level of engagement and the advantages and pitfalls of each.
  • Explain the T.R.A.I.L. acronym and how each community engagement strategy supports this framework.
  • Design a community engagement event using one or more of the strategies in the modules.
This SOESD webPD course addresses four types of community engagement strategies in five separate modules from the most simple to the most nuanced. The first module is an introduction to the four community engagement strategies. 

Modules Overview:
  • Module 1- Community Engagement Foundations
    • Overview: The case for using community engagement strategies in schools and districts
  • Module 2Listening Sessions (Basic)
    • Overview: the most basic way to solicit voices of constituents that may or may not be open-ended
  • Module 3Focus Groups (Intermediate) 
    • Overview: a way to gather constituent perspectives on a specific area of investigation
  • Module 4Empathy Interviews (Intermediate)
    • Overview: 1:1 taking turns listening to a partner to create compassion and improve relationships
  • Module 5Appreciative Interviews (Advanced)
    • Overview: the most intricate process of identifying core values by identifying emerging themes in real time
Course Structure
  • At the beginning of each module are "questions to ponder" to help focus your thinking as you go through the module. At the end, you will see these questions again to help you coalesce your thoughts and learning.
  • The community engagement strategies are arranged in an order from increasing order of engagement and complexity.
  • Each module is arranged in the same manner: definitions and examples; engagement in action; trail mix Ingredients; before/during/after facilitating; pros, cons, and caveats; resources.
  • Each module is calibrated to take approximately an hour to complete. Times may vary due to the volume of resources and individuals' reading speed.
