Event Description
CONNECT Postvention is a one day training designed to guide professionals regarding developing a planned response to a suicide or sudden death. This is an opportunity for districts to evolve or update their Adi's Act Postvention planning (SB 52; ORS 339.343; OAR 581-022-2510).
The training aims to address to following topics:
Best practices on how to coordinate a comprehensive and safe response to a suicide
Strategies for reducing the risk of contagion
Review of the complexity of suicide-related grief, especially for different age groups
Recommendations for funerals and memorial activities
Suggestions of how to talk to survivors of suicide loss to promote their healing
Best practices for safe messaging about suicide and responding to the media
Identification of community resources to promote healing
This one day training is specifically designed for leaders in education including but not limited to: building administrators, counselors, social workers, school psychologists, members of a district's Flight/Crisis Response teams.
PLEASE NOTE: It is recommended to complete training in suicide prevention, intervention, and/or Flight Team/Crisis Response training PRIOR to attending postvention training.
***Individuals who have experienced a loss from suicide, particularly a recent loss (such as within the past year), may find that a suicide postvention training evokes discomfort and/or feelings of regret. It is recommended that anyone who is impacted by a loss to suicide contact the instructor before attending the training to determine their readiness for prevention training and to discuss any alternative programs which may be more appropriate. Similarly, although Postvention training is focused on healing, the subject matter may be difficult for newer survivors. Survivors are encouraged to contact Connect staff in advance to discuss their readiness for participation.***
