Southern Oregon AI Summit 24

Come join us for a full day of session on AI and emerging developments in the field. We will cover education uses from teacher support, and student use to AI and the law. We hope to have something for both our educational audiences, and the larger community. A wide range of speakers will provide topics designed to meet your needs and inspire your exploration into the expanding uses of AI.

Dr. Rachelle Dené Poth

Educator, Attorney, Consultant, Author
Dr. Rachelle Dené Poth is an edtech consultant, presenter, attorney, author, and teacher of Spanish and STEAM: Emerging Technology. Rachelle has a Juris Doctor degree from Duquesne University School of Law, a Master’s, and a Doctorate in Instructional Technology. Rachelle specializes in AI, AI and the Law, AR/VR, Cybersecurity, SEL, and STEM, in addition to other topics as requested. She has more than six years of teaching and presenting on AI in her classroom and working with educators worldwide.
Rachelle is an ISTE-certified educator and recipient of the ISTE Making IT Happen Award and several presidential gold and silver awards for volunteer service. She presents regularly at state, national, and international conferences and provides professional development and coaching for educators on a variety of topics, including assessments and emerging technologies such as AI, AR and VR, and STEM. She is the author of nine books and a blogger for Defined Learning, Edutopia, and Getting Smart.

Our mission is to rovide AI literacy training to 1 million educators and lead the responsible adoption of Generative AI in the education ecosystem, empowering teachers and ultimately improving student outcomes while preparing them for the future.

Mandy DePriest picMandy is a Curriculum & Content Developer at AI for Education. She has over 15 years of experience in public education, having served as a classroom teacher, library media specialist, and instructional coach. She has also taught education technology courses in higher education settings as well as professional development workshops for teachers on the transformative power of technology. She is committed to ensuring that students are prepared for the dynamic demands of the future by leveraging the power of technology-driven instruction.

Broadband & Digital Technologies Adoption Coordinator
Oregon State University | Extension & Engagement Computing Technology Unit

As Broadband and Digital Technologies Adoption Coordinator at Oregon State University, I engage with communities and organizations across Oregon to help them access and use broadband and digital technologies safely and responsibly for education, telemedicine, workforce and economic development. This includes promoting and educating on topics such as digital equity, digital literacy, safe computing/cybersecurity, and digital technologies adoption.







Anjali Rajpara from Brisk

Brisk Teaching is a Chrome Extension designed for educators and school leaders, offering tools that streamline lesson planning, align curriculum with academic standards, and provide real-time data insights, helping teachers reclaim 10-20+ hours per week.

 

Anjali serves as the Customer Success Lead at Brisk Teaching. Since joining the team early this year, she has supported hundreds of schools and districts in implementing Brisk. Previously, Anjali spent five years on the Customer Success team at NoRedInk, also partnering with districts in a similar capacity. She is passionate about supporting teachers and students through leveraging the power of technology.

General Sessions 

Introduction to Generative AI for Educators  (Mandy DePriest)

A dynamic workshop designed to demystify the rapidly evolving world of Generative AI (GenAI) and its applications in education. This interactive session develops participants’ comprehensive foundational understanding, builds practical skills, and explores the ethical considerations necessary for responsibly adopting GenAI tools into teaching practices.

Artificial Intelligence in Education: What Do We Need to Know?  (Rachelle Dené Poth)

Learn how AI is used in education and its implications for the future. We will discuss AI, how it is being used, its impact, and explore resources for teaching about AI. Walk away with a better understanding of the benefits and ethical considerations of AI for education.

Breakout Sessions 

AI-Powered Classrooms: Bridging the Gap between Humans and Machines (Rachelle Dené Poth)

The session will focus on the uses of Artificial Intelligence and how these tools can be used in any classroom as ways for students to explore and design their own chatbots, for example. We will talk about Generative AI and dive into its uses and concerns and explore how it is evolving and the implications for education and the future of work. Resources will be shared and attendees will have time to explore and discuss the many tools that impact learning and work.

AI and The Law: What Do Educators Need To Know (Rachelle Dené Poth)

The session will be led by an educator and attorney who will provide guidance on the legal considerations when it comes to integrating AI technologies in educational settings. The session will outline the legal frameworks that govern the use of AI in classrooms, provide insight into dealing with copyright issues, safeguarding privacy rights, and maintaining legal compliance when using these tools. Participants will walk away with practical strategies for teaching students about the ethical, safe, and responsible use of AI. Session is designed so participants will understand how to evaluate tools and protect privacy and also be in compliance with relevant laws and guidelines in place.

Developing an AI Policy (Mandy DePriest)

An essential workshop designed for educational leaders navigating the integration of AI technologies in their institutions. This comprehensive session provides a roadmap for creating robust, effective AI policies that align with organizational vision and address the needs of all stakeholders. Participants explore policy fundamentals, covering key components such as data privacy and academic integrity. Through hands-on activities, attendees will generate ideas for policy elements and their specific contexts, gaining practical skills to implement AI guidelines in educational settings. AI

AI Image Generation for Educators (Mandy DePriest)

Dive into the world of AI-powered image generation and discover how this cutting-edge technology can transform your classroom. Join us as we explore several AI image generation tools and gain practical strategies for crafting effective image generation prompts. The Session focused on the use of image generation in education, discussing various tools and ethical considerations. Key points included the explanation of how image generators work, popular image generator tools, ethical considerations and limitations, writing effective prompts, live demonstration and feedback, and classroom applications.

Using AI to Help with Creative Lesson Ideas and Planning (Victor Villegas)

Discover how AI can revolutionize your teaching strategies! This hands-on workshop equips educators with practical tools and insights to generate innovative lesson ideas and streamline lesson planning, enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. This workshop will also include training on how to create custom GPTs (Generative Pre-trained Transformers).

Learning Generative AI through the lens of culture, self-identity and storytelling (Victor Villegas)

In this workshop, educators will go through a condensed version of a 12-hour AI workshop focused on using the art of storytelling to explore Generative AI platforms and teach students AI skills through the lens of culture and self-identity, while critically examining the themes of AI bias, representation, ethics, copyright, data sovereignty, security and privacy issues. 

AI for Teaching, Learning & Leading with Brisk (Anjali Rajpara)

This will be an interactive session designed for new Brisk users. Together, we’ll set up the Brisk extension, explore Brisk’s core features (leveling, creating content, delivering feedback, reviewing writing, and "boosting" student activities), and talk through best practices. We’ll have time to practice using Brisk, so attendees will come away with materials that they can use to support their work right away.
