From Scribbles to Sentences: Guiding Pre-K to 2nd Graders from Handwriting to Writing Success

Event Details

The progression from handwriting to writing in Pre-K through 2nd grade focuses on building foundational skills that support the development of written expression. We'll explore and build on strategies to help support this natural progesson in early writing.

What It Is

  1. Handwriting:

    • The physical act of forming letters and numbers.
    • Focuses on fine motor skills, pencil grip, letter formation, and spatial awareness (e.g., writing on lines and spacing between words).
    • Builds the muscle memory needed for automaticity, freeing up cognitive resources for composing text.
  2. Writing:

    • The process of generating ideas, organizing thoughts, and expressing them in written form.
    • Involves spelling, sentence construction, grammar, and vocabulary development.
    • Progresses from labeling or simple phrases to complete sentences and eventually short paragraphs.

We will spotlight the transition from handwriting to writing by using a combination of the arts and sciences with insights from neuroscience, cognitive psychology, language acquisition, and multi-literacy standards to spark collective curiosity and cultivate shared understanding—helping students transform their scribbles into confident, creative sentences.
