Where CVI Meets Math: A Series for Maximizing Impact and Building Numeracy
Hey Fabulous TSVIs, O&M Specialists, and teachers and assistants who work with students with CVI! Ready to multiply your impact in the classroom while adding fresh strategies to your toolbox? Claudia, Oregon's CVI TOSA Extraordinaire, and JJ, Oregon’s Math TOSA (aka the "Numeracy Nerd"), are teaming up for an exciting spring series designed to bridge the gap between CVI and math. By combining the power of vision development with effective numeracy strategies, we’ll help you maximize your students' learning potential. When CVI meets math, magic happens!
This three-phase series focuses on building numeracy skills in students with CVI, supporting their development across all phases of vision, and incorporating math into their daily routines and environments. We’ll focus on adapting strategies based on the unique visual needs and sensory experiences of each phase, ensuring that students engage with numeracy in ways that are both meaningful and practical.
Phase 1 & 2:
"Sense the Numbers: Building Foundations for CVI Phase 1 Numeracy"
In Phase 1, students’ vision may be minimal or almost non-existent, so we’ll focus on engaging their other senses to begin building numeracy.
"Discover the Numbers: Expanding Numeracy in CVI Phase 2"
As students' vision develops in Phase 2, they begin using vision alongside other senses to interact with the world. In this phase, we’ll explore how to incorporate vision more purposefully into numeracy learning while continuing to engage the other senses.
Phase 3: "Engage with Numbers: Mastering Numeracy in CVI Phase 3"
By Phase 3, students' vision is significantly improved and sometimes approaches the near-vision abilities of typically sighted peers. However, considerations for visual fatigue, glare, and visual complexity still need to be made. In this phase, we’ll focus on refining numeracy skills and fostering deeper visual engagement.
Throughout the series, Claudia and JJ will combine their expertise in CVI and math to collaborate with you to build your confidence and strategies for developing number sense at every phase of CVI. You’ll learn how to meet your students where they are and use their environment and routines to embed numeracy opportunities throughout the day. With practical, sensory-driven strategies, you’ll be equipped to help students at any phase of CVI progress toward math mastery.
So, we would love for you to join us, sign up, and get ready for workshops that will enhance your teaching and support your students' success. We can’t wait to see you there!
Because when CVI meets math...magic happens.
