Specially Designed Instruction, Services, & Placement

Join us for the fourth session of the IEP Foundations training series, where we’ll take a deep dive into several key sections of the IEP. While participation in previous IEP Foundations sessions provides helpful context, it is not required to attend this session. Participants are welcome to join even if they are attending for the first time. This session will not be recorded.

This session will focus on understanding and documenting the Service Summary, Specially Designed Instruction (SDI), and outlining appropriate Related Services. We’ll also cover how to effectively write and align Supplementary Aids and Services, including Accommodations and Modifications, as well as Program Modifications and Supports for School Personnel.

Additionally, participants will learn how to write a strong Non-Participation Justification, eligibility requirements for Extended School Year (ESY) services, and make informed decisions around Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) and Placement Determination.

Instructors:

Malory Turner serves as the Special Education Professional Learning Coach, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Liaison, and Regional Technical Assistance Provider at NWRESD. In her role, she collaborates with special educators, specialists, related service providers, and directors to deliver professional learning and technical assistance that supports their work. Malory holds a Master of Arts in Teaching in Special Education from Pacific University, a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Sciences with a focus on Human Services from Oregon State University, and a Certificate in Childhood Studies from Bangor University. With a strong commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities, Malory brings a wide range of experience in both educational and therapeutic recreational settings. She has worked in education for nearly a decade, serving in roles such as Special Education Instructional Assistant, Special Education Teacher, Mentor Teacher, and Teacher Leader. 

Sarah Walker has been an educator for over twenty years, serving in various roles including teacher, special educator, and administrator. She is currently a special education instructional coach at Northwest Regional ESD, supporting new educators. She has worked in K–12 education across both general and special education settings, supporting a wide range of student populations. Sarah is passionate about ensuring that all students receive a high-quality educational experience and about equipping educators with the knowledge and skills to meet diverse student needs. She has attended Purdue University, Oakland City University, Lewis & Clark College, and Portland State University, earning her bachelor's, master's, and administrative licensure in leadership and administration.
