Navigating Interpretation & Translation in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Process

This training is designed to help IEP case managers and team members better understand the role of interpreters and translators in the IEP process and how to work with them effectively to support meaningful parent participation.

Participants will explore the differences between interpretation and translation, the various types of interpretation, and the essential qualities and ethics interpreters bring to the work. The session also highlights best practices for planning and conducting multilingual IEP meetings, with tips for fostering cultural awareness, building trust with families, and navigating communication barriers.

We'll cover:
- The legal requirements for interpretation and translation under IDEA
- When and how to provide translated IEP documents and procedural notifications
- How to schedule and prepare for meetings with interpreters
- Tips for clear communication before, during, and after IEP meetings
- Cultural considerations and how to work effectively across diverse communities
- NWRESD’s services for written translation and in-person/virtual interpretation

Whether you’re new to this work or looking to refine your practices, this session will provide valuable guidance and resources to support inclusive, equitable IEP processes.
