IEP Refresher: Extended School Year
Extended School Year decisions can be complex. This focused refresher helps special education teams strengthen their understanding of ESY requirements and make confident, data-informed decisions. Participants will review federal and Oregon guidance, explore regression and recoupment considerations, and learn best practices for gathering data, determining eligibility, and documenting ESY services clearly and compliantly within the IEP.
Participants will be able to:
- Describe the purpose of ESY and how it differs from general education summer school
- Apply federal IDEA and Oregon requirements to ESY eligibility determinations
- How data is used to support individualized ESY decisions
- Identify appropriate data sources and timelines for collecting ESY-related information
- Document ESY decisions and services accurately

Instructor:
Malory Turner serves as the Special Education Professional Learning Coach, Traumatic Brain Injury Liaison, and Regional Technical Assistance Provider at NWRESD. She collaborates with educators, specialists, and district leaders to provide high-quality professional learning and technical assistance focused on special education processes and IEP development. Malory was recognized with the Noel Connall Instruction and Professional Development Award from the Oregon Education Association for her instrumental role in developing and delivering exceptional special education training and resources. She holds a Master’s in Special Education from Pacific University and brings nearly a decade of experience as an inclusion assistant, special educator, and mentor teacher supporting students with disabilities across a range of settings.
