Special Education In-Depth:
Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) & Alternative Access

Focusing on tools such as switches, eye gaze, partner-assisted scanning, head tracking, and more, this session will provide an introduction on how to operate these access methods effectively and incorporate them into your speech session or classroom.

Participants will learn how to adapt classroom activities and curriculum to be accessible through alternative access, increasing meaningful participation and inclusion for students with complex communication and physical needs. Whether you're just getting started or looking to enhance your practice, this event will offer practical strategies and resources to support all learners in reaching their full communicative and academic potential.

Instructor:
Sam Stidham, M.S., CCC-SLP is an augmentative/alternative communication specialist speech-language pathologist at Northwest Regional ESD serving students from kindergarten through transition in Columbia, Clatsop, and Washington Counties. She is a passionate advocate for making communication accessible to all students, with a particular interest in supporting children with complex bodies in accessing communication through eye gaze, switches, or other alternative means. Language is what makes us human - every student has something to say, and Sam’s goal is to support students in saying whatever they want, however they want, whenever they want, to whomever they want.
