Event Description
Special Education In-Depth:
Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) vs. Assistive Technology (AT)
This training will provide educators and support staff with a clear understanding of the differences between augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) and assistive technology (AT). While both AAC and AT fall under the umbrella of supports that enhance student access and participation, they serve unique purposes in addressing communication and learning needs. Participants will learn how AAC supports students with complex communication needs, while AT encompasses a wide range of tools and services designed to increase independence, access, and success across the educational environment.
Hosted by an AAC specialist and an AT specialist, this training will feature practical examples, case studies, and collaborative discussion to help participants gain clarity on how these supports intersect and differ, as well as when and how to pursue appropriate services for students. The session will also outline the referral process for accessing AAC and AT services through the education service district (ESD), equipping participants with the knowledge and confidence to collaborate effectively with colleagues and specialists.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to differentiate between AAC and AT, describing the unique purposes and functions of each
- Participants will be able to explain the differences between AAC and AT to colleagues and team members using clear, practical examples.
- Participants will be able to identify and explain the process for accessing AAC and AT services through Northwest Regional ESD.

Instructor:
Sam Stidham, M.S., CCC-SLP is an augmentative/alternative communication specialist speech-language pathologist at Northwest Regional ESD serving students from kindergarten through transition in Columbia, Clatsop, and Washington Counties. She is a passionate advocate for making communication accessible to all students, with a particular interest in supporting children with complex bodies in accessing communication through eye gaze, switches, or other alternative means. Language is what makes us human - every student has something to say, and Sam’s goal is to support students in saying whatever they want, however they want, whenever they want, to whomever they want.
Jennifer South, OTR/L, ATP, NWRESD Assistive Technology Specialist. She began her occupational therapy career in 1993 working in a variety of clinical settings. In 2003, she joined the team at Northwest Regional ESD working with school aged children, and in 2010 her role expanded to include assistive technology. Since that time, Jennifer has studied extensively on the provision of assistive technology in the school setting, and has presented on a variety of AT topics for school districts, advocacy groups and conferences. Jennifer has been a guest lecturer at George Fox, Lewis and Clark and Pacific Universities. She is a member of the Oregon Technology Access Program’s Professional Learning Team, and currently serves on the Oregon Accessibility Panel, a group which serves to advise on accessibility supports with respect to the inclusion of students with disabilities in statewide assessment. Jennifer is passionate about educating school teams, future educators, and therapists regarding assistive technology so that students may have equitable access and experience success in their education.
