Southern Oregon Social Studies Workshops

Event Details

SOESD is offering Professional Development during the SOREN Summer for Social Studies teachers and others interested in History, Civics, Geography, and Economic. This slate of offerings are stand-alone, but grouped together to minimize travel for
participants
Concepts so far:
  • From the Civics Learning Project
    • Making Civics Real: Community-Based Learning for the Classroom
      • This interactive professional learning experience centers on the power of experiential learning to deepen students’ civic understanding and engagement. Participants will explore the foundations of experiential education, examine models that connect classroom content to real-world contexts, and identify practical strategies for integrating these experiences into their curriculum. As a featured example, the session includes a guided courthouse tour, where educators will have the opportunity to observe arraignments and engage in conversations with judges, attorneys, and court staff. The session will conclude with a collaborative discussion on other community-based learning opportunities that are accessible, curriculum-aligned, and student-centered. Participants will leave with tools, ideas, and inspiration to create rich, real-world learning experiences that bring civics to life.
  • Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education
  • Co-Teaching TSEL within the new Social Studies standards
  • Oregon’s landmark legislation (Four Part Series)
