Developing and Refining Models to Uncover Student Thinking with HHMI Biointeractive

Event Details

Join us for a workshop focused on the science practice of developing and using models. Together, we’ll explore free, NGSS-aligned classroom resources from HHMI BioInteractive that illustrate how modeling can make student thinking visible and deepen conceptual understanding.
Using phenomena across scales such as protein synthesis, photosynthesis, digestion, and ecosystem interactions, we’ll identify the components, interactions, and mechanisms within models that promote meaningful sense-making. We’ll also practice strategies in conjunction with the resources for eliciting and interpreting student ideas, providing timely feedback, and supporting model revision to strengthen reasoning and communication. Bring your curiosity, classroom experience, and questions to this interactive professional learning day with colleagues from across the region.

Audience: This workshop is for teachers who teach any level of high school biology and environmental science, including introductory and advanced (AP/IB) courses. Middle school teachers, particularly 8th grade science teachers, are welcome to attend.
Facilitators: Kate Fisher and Chris Hedeen
