Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) to Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP): Train-the-Trainer Series

 What:
This is a virtual nine-session series facilitated by Dr. Chris Borgmeier, consisting of live instruction and time allocated for independent completion of seven progressive e-Learning modules that provide in-depth training in the knowledge and skills for conducting a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and leading a Behavior Intervention Planning (BIP) team through the process of developing, implementing, and evaluating a BIP.

Each module/session will include homework tasks, which are critical to solidifying learning through real-world application of the content presented in each module. Dr. Borgmeier will provide coaching and feedback based on homework (FBA/BIP) tasks submitted. Completion of the homework tasks will result in a completed FBA/BIP case with a real student.

Upon completion of the series, participants will receive a certificate for 24 Professional Development Units (PDUs).

 Who Should Attend:
K-12 school staff who will be leading behavior intervention planning for students with persistent challenging behavior. You must have the time and capacity to carry out FBA/BIP responsibilities (e.g., conducting interviews, observations, leading and supporting BIP teams). We encourage training teams of 3-4 people within a building to build capacity and plan for sustainability.

Participants Commonly Include:
K-12 Behavior Specialists/Consultants/Assistants, School Psychologists, Special Education Directors, Dean of Students, School Counselors, Special Education Case Managers, Administrators, or any other position who would have the capacity to meet the requirements of the training.

Participants Must:

  • Be employed by a school district in Columbia, Clatsop, Tillamook, or Washington County
  • Attend all nine training sessions
  • Complete homework tasks between training
  • Conduct additional FBA/BIPs beyond the training case
  • Serve as a coach and training facilitator for future training of in-district staff in FBA/BIP following completion of the training
  • Gain pre-approval from your District Special Education Director or local equivalent in a similar role
    • Email Malory Turner confirmation (proof) of the approval to obtain the registration code

 When & Where:
Session dates, in the table below, are scheduled around every 1-2 weeks, which gives participants an opportunity to complete the homework task before moving on to the next module.

 Instructor:
Chris Borgmeier, PhD, is a professor in the Special Education Department at Portland State University. His research interests focus on School-wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (SW-PBIS), Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) and intervention, implementation of evidence-based practices and systems change in schools.

Dr. Borgmeier is particularly interested in working with schools and school districts to maximize resources to implement evidence-based practices for students with challenging behavior and behavioral disorders. This begins with a strong foundation in universal (Tier 1) intervention that provides a safe, positive school experience that maximizes instructional time for all students. Much of his current work focuses on developing tools to train school personnel to better understand students with challenging behavior and how to intervene based on an understanding of the function or purpose of the problem behavior.

Dr. Borgmeier earned his PhD at the University of Oregon and worked as a PBIS coordinator at a school district in the Bay Area in California before coming to Portland State University. He has been a trainer and consultant for SW-PBIS implementation efforts across the United States and Canada. Dr. Borgmeier currently serves as board vice president for the Northwest PBIS Network, Inc.
