Event Details

Event Description

This session will equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to guide schools through their most difficult moments. This training provides a strong foundation for responding effectively when tragedy strikes—whether it’s a death or other traumatic event with community impact. Participants will gain practical strategies, compassionate approaches, and a clear understanding of their role in school recovery.

Topics covered include:

  • Response overview & timeline
  • Navigating grief & developmental stages of grief
  • Impact of trauma
  • Roles of school staff vs. response team members
  • Support room setup, activities, and processes
  • Best practices for honoring loss: memorials and student belongings
  • Communication with staff, students, families, and community
  • Supporting staff needs
  • Tailoring support for specific tragedies and traumatic events (e.g., suicide, homicide, non-death events)
No mental health background is required to participate in this training, and crisis and tragedy response teams are not limited to staff in certain roles. This training is open to any school staff or community partners who want to learn how to support others effectively and sensitively in a crisis or tragedy.
