Event Description

Comprehension Is Complex is the second course in SOESD's Science of Reading offerings. This course will present an overview of the critical elements of teaching individual students, small groups and whole classes of students reading comprehension skills, as well as the research constructs and studies that support those teaching concepts and strategies.
In this course, we will present some of the key research findings in the Science of Reading, as well as the challenges facing school systems and teachers today in the area of Comprehension. We will explore some of the interfaces of grammar, syntax, vocabulary, text structures and background knowledge. The last module in this course will use Think-Alouds to integrate the comprehension strategies and concepts using authentic texts to apply the skills of comprehension repeatedly. 

Learning Goals
  • Become familiar with the research findings that explain the relationship between oral and written language 
  • Understand the academic vocabulary plays an important role in comprehension and how to teach academic vocabulary thoroughly
  • Explain the functions of parts of speech, nouns, verbs and prepositional phrases, simple, compound and complex sentences. 
  • Develop strategies to teach vocabulary, grammar and syntax, comprehension structures and  strategies that aid a reader in transforming to understand information
  • Become familiar with the teaching strategies for Read-Alouds/Think Alouds
  • Understand the intimate relationship between comprehension and background knowledge
