SIOP in Action: Supporting Accessible Input & Maximizing Meaningful Output

Whether you’re new to the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model, or looking for a refresher, this session will explore practical instructional techniques that support comprehension and language production. Dr. Toppel will highlight key components of SIOP and show how they empower teachers and students alike—enhancing learning for multilingual students and benefiting every learner in your classroom.This session is hands-on, interactive, and designed with YOU in mind. Walk away with practical tools you can implement in your classroom the very next week. Engage in discussions, practice new strategies, and collaborate with colleagues to strengthen your instructional toolkit. 

Katie Toppel, Ed.D is a teacher, author, and presenter. She is currently an elementary Multilingual Learner Specialist serving multilingual learners through co-planning, co-teaching, and small group instruction. Dr. Toppel’s instructional background includes experience teaching kindergarten and first grade. She was also a K-12 Support Services Teacher at the Franconian International School in Germany. She has taught courses in the ESOL endorsement series at Portland State University and continues to support teachers in their professional learning journeys. Additionally, Dr. Toppel co-authored Making Content Comprehensible for Multilingual Learners: The SIOP Model (6th ed.) and co-authored DIY PD: A Guide to Self-Directed Learning for Educators of Multilingual Learners.
