Increasing regular attendance in Southern Oregon revolves around building school cultures that promote safety, belonging and mattering for
all of the students we serve within our school communities. You are invited to join us for a day of learning surrounding two topics that have been communicated to us as top priorities by our district leaders:
- Supporting our LGBTQ+ students within an inclusive school community
- Supporting our educators in continuing to build trauma-informed practices and systems that increase our ability to help our students and staff stay regulated during the school day and beyond
We know that this work will allow more students to come to school more often, and we are excited to continue this journey with you.
Please ensure that the appropriate administrators and staff are informed and invited as we are opening these sessions up to ALL change agents outside of our regular attendance teams!
Session 1: LGBTQ+ Cultural Proficiency in Schools with Ricky Robertson: 8:30 am to 11:30 am
Creating safe and affirming learning environments is critical to fostering achievement and equity for
all students. This work is both personal and professional and invites us to explore our own biases and behaviors as we develop new mindsets, skills, and practices that empower all students, including those who are LGBTQ+. In this session, we will explore: guiding principles of LGBTQ+ cultural proficiency in schools; insight into the diversity, strengths, and struggles embodied among LGBTQ+ youth; and strategies for building safe and affirming classrooms and schools for LGBTQ+ students, staff, and families.
Some of you may have been introduced to Ricky Robertson at SOESD’s first annual Equity Summit in August where he was a keynote presenter and led several breakout sessions. Ricky will be in Medford and Klamath Falls for this entire week in February to help us focus our equity lens within our trauma-informed practices with practical tools for both educators and their students. Please go to
PD Networks and search with “Building Resilience" to find out more and to sign up for the two-day, "Building Resilience: Integrated Systems of Support" workshop.
We are so thankful that Ricky is joining us again to continue and deepen the work he began earlier this year
through a lens of increasing regular attendance for ALL students and educators.
Session 2: Building Schools with Strong Rigor and Relationships with Jody McVittie - 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm
Everybody in the school building is working really hard to foster effective learning and a healthy climate. Working “harder” will not create the solutions we want. Learn how to intentionally build the systems for students and adults that will foster strong learning communities. In this half-day session we will focus on tools to build the social infrastructure for schools that serve the students we have today. This session is designed to offer information and practical tools, with time allocated in the session to work together with your team to lay out the next steps.
Jody is back in Southern Oregon to continue providing next steps for our region in building trauma-informed schools with embedded trauma-informed practices. If you or your school staff have already attended her trainings, this session will allow you to look at the work through a more systems-based lens than a classroom-based lens. This intentional, systems-level work will help to raise regular attendance for all students and educators.
Jody has been facilitating sold-out trainings for our region since early 2019 and is continuing to provide trainings throughout this current school year. We are currently at capacity for Jody’s February sessions. However, she will be back again in April. Sign up early in order to reserve your spot.
