PD RATIONAL & OVERVIEW

Southern Oregon PBS Education’s mission is to strengthen Southern Oregon’s workforce by developing industry standard media arts (video) and digital storytelling skills among K-12 media arts teachers, whom will in turn pass these skills on to their students. Simply put, we achieve this through our unique PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs (SRL) pilot sites at various participating middle schools and high schools in the Rogue Valley. Our Education Coordinator, Ben Garcia, has been trained by PBS Newshour to conduct video production teacher professional development, which he provides for local video teachers who are currently teaching an SRL pilot class or would like to someday have a pilot SRL class. The SRL PD training detailed below in the "Scope and Sequence"  is a component to not only meeting our SO PBS Education mission, but also an immense support as a teacher pilots an SRL pilot site and prepares to apply to PBS Newshour to have an authentic Student Reporting Lab site/class (https://studentreportinglabs.org/about/). PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs video teachers prepare local video students for a modern broadcast media landscape whose video products are published mostly online, thus students learn to not only be 21st century video field producers but also adept citizen journalists. This PD curriculum training for local teachers prepares aspiring video journalism educators to be mentors to aspiring student videographers and/or student video journalists. Having video teachers trained by local industry professionals, in association with SO PBS and PBS Newshour, ultimately assists our local students not only learn professional level video production skills, and also Journalism skills, but will help them stratify into local media arts related careers or media arts college pathways of study via the skills they will gain from our collaborative PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs project. 

OBJECTIVES (outcomes/targets)

• By the end of this PD local media arts teacher participant will have the hard/soft journalism and video production skills needed to convert their current video production class into a pilot PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs, and also be prepared to apply to have an non-pilot SRL site at their school: https://studentreportinglabs.org/apply/

• By the end of this PD a local media arts teacher will have been trained how to modify, differentiate, and effectively teach the PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs curriculum 

ENROLMENT: Please contact instructor for this course (Ben’s contact info below) before enrolling for this course so you can meet with station and receive the official PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs presentation to decide whether this long-term commitment between you, your school, SO PBS, and PBS Newshour is the right fit for your current and long term education environment/circumstances.

GOALS (for any new SRL pilot site to strive toward)

• Acquire Equipment

  • One Kit = Canon 80D camera or better, Magnus VT 3000 Tripod or better, Rode RodeLink FM Digital Wireless mic or better, field production lights, batteries, & protective accessories like camera cases, protective UV lense filters, etc.

  • one kit per 3 students

  • for teacher training purposes SO PBS PD trainer, Ben, can bring his field production kit to school if at designated PD day/time another class is using school camera equipment

• A teacher that is at least familiar with cameras, video production & journalism

  • Students/teachers must like cameras, video production & journalism

• A dedicated video class with the same group of students all year (meets 3+ times a wk)

• A classroom with furniture that can be moved to make room for field production kits

• 9-19 students in an SRL class 

  • The more students: a.) the higher the equipment cost; b.) the less agile student news teams can be; c.) the harder it becomes to meet PBS Newshour deadlines; and d.) the more behavior MGMT cuts into instructional time or the creation of a real news room environment.

Note: In Year 2 of S.O.-PBS/school SRL collaboration these "goals" become requirements in order to bring PBS Newshour on as a partner​ (PBS Newshour considers airing only the best student videos once partnership is established and students start producing/submitting videos to them).

DAYS/TIMES: To be determined by S.O. PBS Education Coordinator and teacher participant (usually once a week outside of SRL class)

PDU CREDIT: 25 - 50 depending on attendance throughout the school year (S.O. PBS Education Coordinator, Ben, will keep track of hours and issue a PD Certificate at the end of the school year.)

S.O. PBS Education Department Professional Development Scope and Sequence

(Semester II. 2020 (18 weeks) Intermediate videography PD)

1. Winter Quarter III. Unit #1: Videography

   1. Anatomy of the camera: Holding a camera, care and safety of equipment, form of the DSLR, information display on LCD panels, basic settings: camera modes, auto versus manual, setting movie recording size/resolution, formatting media

   2. Camera stabilization: Types of camera motion, the mobile frame--when and why to move the camera, parts of the tripod, safe and effective tripod operation, other types of stabilization 

   3. Exposure: luminance and color, assessing exposure, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, histogram, white balance

   4. Lenses: manual aperture adjustment, f-stop, focal length and field of view, types of lenses, auto and manual focus, critical and acceptable focus, lens distortion, shallow and deep focus, depth of field.

   5. Composition: shot types, camera angle, balanced and unbalanced compositions, rule of thirds, eye-line, screen direction, lead room/nose room   

2. Spring Quarter IV. 2020 (9 weeks): Intermediate Editing

   1. Unit #2: Adobe premiere basics

      1. File management, premiere workspaces and interface, video formats, bins and organization, ingesting, importing

      2. Basic editing, timelines and sequences, video transitions

      3. Audio editing, linking/delinking, audio transitions, stereo and mono audio, organizing audio in sequences

      4. Using effects, motion and duration effects, simple animation, titles

      5. Introduction to continuity techniques: shot/reverse shot, glance cuts, match on action, graphic match, audio bridge, 

      6. Exporting

3. Summer Session 2020 - Advanced Audio and Lighting

   1. Summer Quarter V. (6 weeks): Audio Recording

      1. Unit #3:

         1. Sound and hearing: nature of sound, the sound wave, frequency, pitch, amplitude, loudness, phase, envelope and timbre.

         2. Digital audio: quantization, sample rate, digital audio formats, compressed and uncompressed audio formats

         3. Recorders: anatomy of the recorder, basic controls, removable media, information display on LCD panels, basic menu settings, audio meter, -12 dB target for audio, audio peaking and distortion, signal to noise ratio  

         4. Microphones: anatomy of a microphone, transducers, dynamic vs condenser mics, pickup patterns, special purpose microphones for video (lavalier, shotgun), wireless vs wired microphones, boom pole, cables, shock mounts, connectors, sources of noise

         5. Production: choosing sound environments, studio recording, field recording, narration, dialogue, sound design 

         6. Creative sound: voice, music, effects, diegetic and non-diegetic sound, sound parallels picture, sound defines picture, picture defines sound, sound counterpoint
