Are we going to go back to “normal” after the pandemic?
Now is an opportunity to change our schools to be a force for equity, excellence, and wellbeing. But how do we change the system?

This professional development event is for you if you are a teacher or an administrator who believes that to heal trauma and overcome structural inequities, the structure itself needs to change.

Dynamic Governance, also called Sociocracy, is a self-organizing model of governance that can be implemented at any or all levels of the educational system, from working with students in the classroom to the administrative and policy levels.

In this introductory workshop you will learn:
  • How Sociocracy allows a school to manage itself as an organic whole, where all voices are engaged and included.
  • How Sociocracy lets a school toggle between hierarchical structures and a flat, non-hierarchical structure that supports transformative learning by both students and adults.
  • How to facilitate dynamic consent decision-making to unleash creativity, wholeness, and equity.
Activities:
  • Prior to class, enjoy documentary videos of schools using dynamic governance (aka sociocracy) and explore a case-study of a school using sociocracy.
  • In class, learn the principles of Sociocracy and interactively practice these skills on real challenges that you are invited to bring to the class
  • For those taking the workshop for university credit, a short additional requirement will be assigned as a post-workshop activity.
Three Course Facilitators:
Dr. Renee Owen is Professor of Educational Leadership, Southern Oregon University. Prior to her role in higher education, Renee was principal for 12 years of a Dynamic Governance school.
Monika Megyesi heads the GovernanceAlive Sociocracy Training Institute, is a consultant certified by the International Sociocracy Certification Board, and is a certified mediator.
John Buck is co-author of We the People: Consenting to a Deeper Democracy and co-author of a forthcoming book, Governance From Below: Can Children Lead The Way. He is a lead consultant certified by the International Sociocracy Certification Board.
