Day 1- Creating Assistive Technology Solutions in Minutes - Our greatest and most precious commodity is “Time”. We continue to live in a fast pace world. We want something and we want it now. No time to wait. Students with disabilities, should not have to wait for solutions that could be created in five minutes using available tools and materials. Carpa Diem – Seize the day, seize the hour, seize the minutes, seize the seconds. This session will discuss how to become an AT McGyver, McGyva, or McGyvette. Identify tools, materials, and resources that should be in your rapid problem-solving kits. Discover resources, people, places, and how-to videos for instance access to the “know-how” to building devices. Be inspired by other AT McGyvers. Learn how to see the world differently and to think outside the box. In addition, day one will explore over 200 different technologies that can be rapidly fabricated for students with disabilities including devices for: reading, writing, communicating, self regulation relaxation and recreation, transitioning to employment and life skills.
Day 2 – Becoming a Rapid Problems Solver – Make and Take – Day two focuses on development of actual skills using: specialty tapes, cutting tools, and reusable plastics for rapid fabrication of 10 multiuse device to take home. Learn the importance of the “…ABLE Principles in Device Creation”: Making devices that are adjustable, portable, repositionable, reusable, repurposeable, collapsible, affordable and more. Participants will make devices for reading, writing, holding, carrying, mounting, communication, self regulation, relaxation, self care, eating, drinking, drawing, painting, working and more.
