SOESD invites Southern Oregon educators to join Angela Allen, ODE's Talented and Gifted Education Specialist, on Thursday, October 5, for full-day workshop focused instructional strategies that will improve outcomes for ALL students. Participants are welcome to attend one or both sessions.
Note: For those who attended last year, Angela's main focus this year is services – what do services look like in classrooms and a reminder of why we identify students and who those students are, especially in local context.
Morning Session (8:30 am to 11:30 am): High Leverage Instructional Strategies through the Lens of Depth of Knowledge
Description: Participants will learn about instructional strategies that promote measurable growth outcomes for all students. Topics addressed include Depth of Knowledge (DOK), different v. differentiation (examples and non-examples), student agency, MTSS instructional framework, and assessed rate and level of learning.
Afternoon Session (12:30 pm to 3:30 pm): Recognizing and Supporting Our TAG Students
Description: Participants will learn how to recognize the characteristics of students identified as Talented and Gifted (TAG) and provide support through a variety of practices inclusive of both academic and social-emotional learning. While some traits are easy to identify in students who show interest in school, many students go under the radar in TAG identification. Topics addressed include George Betts Gifted Profiles, characteristics common in English Learners, social-emotional needs and challenges, overexcitabilities, underachievement, and classroom tips to develop strengths of students.
There will be a one-hour, lunch-on-your-own break from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.
