The Cure for Hate - Film presentation, group discussions and support for teaching SB664

Event Details

SOESD invites educators to join Amanda Coven, of the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, and Tony McAleer (film subject) on Friday, October 13 (statewide inservice day), for a unique learning opportunity that goes beyond Holocaust education.

During this full day program, participants will:
  • view the documentary film, The Cure for Hate, which focuses on Tony McAleer, a former neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier who visited Auschwitz as part of his atonement and repentance work
  • engage in group discussions
  • model a lesson
  • learn about appropriate and productive ways to respond to antisemitic incidents
  • gain support building a strong classroom and school culture, recognizing the signs of extremist attitudes, and teaching Oregon’s Holocaust and genocide education requirement.
The Cure for Hate team has received grant funding to offer in-person educational programs where Tony shares his journey in an effort to combat Holocaust denial and rising extremism. The program addresses social emotional learning and deepens participants' understanding of community and the dangers of an “us” versus “them” mentality, as well as the bystander effect.

The day includes a one-hour "lunch on your own" break.
